Yuki Yuna S1 also had at least almost 3 years to plan things out, considering they had the full design sheet in 2012, which is just uncharacteristic.
The series kinda lives in an odd balance between its many parties. Takahiro is a shitty writer, but he has good ideas and a savvy mindset that helps to make even trash like Akame ga Kill sellable. Its best to have him as the "planner" and let someone else do the work, really easy to see that difference between WaSuYu LN vs WaSuYu anime.
Akashiro Aoi did a good work at NoWaYu, bet when he moved away from the more Takahiro designed story and started to do KuMeYu, I really felt that lack of "edge" (not in the dark sense).
