I've actually been digging the new Catra, and even the new Frosta honestly. But the problem they, and most of the designs have, is that they are five hundred thousand miles removed from the source material. Some, like Entrapta, don't even share a similar color palette with the original. It's not necessarily bad to reinvent something mind you, but as with a lot of cases of trying to do that, it always ends up feeling like a completely new character that doesn't share anything with the predecessor other than their name, and maybe an ability.
I won't pretend originals really had much personality, but they did have design elements that could be translated to a new design with ease. Catra actually has a little of that with her head... crown... thing. Different, but an attempt was made. But something like Spinnerella? >>104025661
There was no attempt made. Not a spit of the design takes any cues from the original, other than "pink! Purple!" Not even the fairy-lookin'-thing on her chest. Put that literally anywhere and it'd at least be SOMETHING.
Oddly, Bow is the only one that really maintains the original's motifs in full. I mean, other than being black. But, white gold and red palette, belly shirt, heart thing on chest... bow and arrow. It's still different, but you can compare the two see the resemblance in design. Most of the other characters don't really carry much of anything over from the originals.
