Ok, I'll try this one out.
It doesn't carry enough ordinance to justify its existence anymore, it could carry eight missiles, six phoenixes and two sidewinders or sparrows. For the great majority, it had no ground attack capability. In this six phoenix configuation, it couldn't be safely recovered aboard the carrier because it would max out or exceed recovery weight, the wingspan is so large that it just about rides the border of the safe landing area when the nose is centered, and thus requires a very tight approach to stay in, the vast majority of other options like the F/A-18 take up less deck space, they're simpler to maintain because they don't have variable wing geometry, and the majority of F-14's didn't have GE F110's, but Pratt and whitney TF-30's.
So lets say we bring back the F-14 and rebuild it. First, we'd have to change its avionics, which would be a simple matter of course. New engines could be shrouded in for better performance. But the BIG thing, is that we'd have to redesign the airframe to limit the stress that they incur with extreme ease. Next, we'd have to deal with the loss of deck space just because the thing's so fucking HUGE and the limitations of loadout imposed by the catapult and the sheer mass of the airframe, as well as the limitations imposed by the strength of the cables just because she's so fucking huge.>>36473081
she's just too fucking huge and heavy for carrier duty.>>36473168>F-14 works
