Howdy folks,

This is a thread for Scrollhammer, the /tg/ made Elder Scrolls/Warhammer crossover, because we literally could not get more neckbearded and decided to transfer all those fake discussions of people's best Vivec/cliff racer/Hieronymous Lex army lists into real life. Currently, full army lists exist for Daedra Cults, Dragons (including Draugr, and the spirits of Skyrim), the Great Houses of Morrowind, and the Imperial Legion; we've got people working on Elsweyr (cats riding cats!), Black Marsh (more forms of lizard than you could shake a daedric stick at), and the Nordic Holds.

Making a new thread because we have a ~thrilling battle report~ for you! Jyggalag's Greymarch has pushed forward into Cyrodil, only to be met by the Knights of the Nine and their followers - little known to either side, Alduin and a flight of Dragons are waiting to pounce upon the conflict ...

A fairly small and compact army list, this force basically has a lot of tough anvils, and uses the cultists for long-range spell support.

Dragons. Dragons Dragons. They breathe fire, and the Ice Wraiths breath a hell of a lot of ice. Both can hold their own in combat, and Alduin can even resurrect the dragons if things get a bit hairy.

One pretty monstrous unit of Knights of the Nine, with a mage capable of buffing and healing them. They're supported by a bunch of crossbowmen and dragoons, with some bosmer archers whose poisoned arrows should be effective against the Dragons they'll be facing.

Starting positions. The various factions each have their own approach to the issue of tactics - the Greymarch is looking to simply run up to the objective and camp it for the whole game, the Imperials are looking to soften up their enemies with missile fire before making a single glorious charge, while the Dragons want to pick off and flame stragglers.

The Greymarch pushes forward across the board, well befitting its master's straightforward and inexorable nature. The Daedroths move into cover near the top of the board, hoping to counter and flank any advancing Imperial forces. Jyggalag - who has detached from his unit - attempts to Voidscream Lightning the Worldeater fails, but the great clot of cultists behind him mount an effective magical onslaught against a skeletal dragon, nearly killing it.

The Imperials proceed cautiously, knowing that most of their strength lies in the ability to make terrifyingly long-range cavalry-charges across half the board to annihilate the Criminal Scum who threaten the integrity of the Nine's chosen people (the Knights of the Nine were not particularly interested in any kind of 'White-Gold Concordat', especially since their leader fought under Talo's blessing). A group of Bosmer archers - their poisoned arrows coming in handy - together with the crossbowmen - made short work of one of the Dragons.

The Dragons fan out, all the better to start spitting flame and Thu'ums at their foes. All but two of the Bosmer are smoked out by an angry skeletal dragon, the crossbowmen's long firing lines get flamed by the unharmed lesser dragon on that flank, and the skeletons (though hideously inaccurate) knock a few more models off. The ones on the Daedric front fair much worse, though - the crystalline armour and otherworldly nature protects all but two Knights of Order from Draconic attack, while Alduin Marks the Prince of Order For Death.

Turn 2. Jyggalag moves out, ready to charge the World-Eater, but, despite hitting him with a bolt of voidscream lightning, manages somehow to fail in his attempts to wound the great dragon. The Daedroths slink forth to the next bit of cover, but their fire does little against the Dragoons that are currently approaching the objective. The Cultists massacre the hell out of the Skeletal Dragon. In combat, the Knights of Order wound the Lesser Dragon, who can't hit the peerless warriors back; the Daedroths just fail their charge, while Jyggalag begins tearing Alduin a new one, while his status as a physical god protects him from being Marked for Death.

The Imperial Cavalry sets up a number of devastating charges, while the Decurio fortifies the Knights with Resilience. What remains of the Imperial ranged forces knocks a few wounds off the Daedroths, but can't do anything against the dragon on their flank - the Dragoons who charge them do a fair number of wounds, but then get torn apart by the crocodilian daedra. The other two cavalry charges - dragoons vs. a lesser dragon - slaughter their foes.

Alduin and the other Dragon in combat decide to get the hell out of dodge, and use their mighty wings to escape from above, ready to deep strike in next turn. The Ice Wraiths kill 27 of the Jyggalag cultists in a single round of shooting (their natural stealth not helping one bit to protect them). Somehow, the four skeletons who survived the devastating overrun of the Knights managed to claw two down.

The Daedric Prince of Order utterly fails to kill anyone with chain lightning, but makes up for it by killing 4 Knights of the Nine in a single round of combat, although the Knights, and another of those fucking archer skeletons each inflict a wound on him. The Priest of Order manages to resurrect an impressive 6 cultists from his Obelisk of Order, and pulls his coven back out of Ice Wraith range, slaying a couple with Daedric Bites (the others' missiles get lost in the woods).

The combined ranged might of the Imperial archers and crossbowmen takes out all but one of the encroaching Daedroths, severely wounding the remaining one, the Dragoons wheeling to take it out. The Magos Decurio heals the remaining Knights to full strength, and casts resilience - it's enough to save the lives of all but one Knight from Jyggalag, who's been using his Touch of Order (to no avail) to heal himself back up, though they fail to scratch his armoured body, even with their warhammers of might. The Skeletons mystifyingly remain alive.

Alduin and the lesser dragon drop back to earth relatively near their intended targets - Alduin behind the crossbowmen, and the Lesser next to the cultists. The Ice Wraiths freeze 9 of the otherwise largely unmolested Knights of Order; the Lesser Dragon breathes fire on the cultists, killing 2 (they've learnt their lessen about not being bunched up against Dragons). Alduin decides not to breath fire on the crossbowmen, tempting though that is, and instead unleashes a mighty STRUN BA QO, killing 3 Knights of Order, all the Bosmer, 6 crossbowmen, the remaining Daedroth, and wounding the Knights of the Nine and the Decurio. Score!

The Order Priest continues to claw back his cultists, resurrecting another 4 to fight on for Jyggalag - they promptly fail utterly to do anything to the Dragon sitting next to them. The Knights of Order turn to deal with them, but more out of a desire to lessen their numbers hit than anything else. Jyggalag murders another knight, still failing to claw back any more wounds.

Dwindling rapidly following their initial glorious charge, the Imperials fire crossbow bolt after crossbow bolt into the World Eater that's descended behind them (both units held their ground) - they fail to have any impact, though, their bolts bouncing off Alduin's thorny scales. The Dragoons, however, can't help but notice that there's an unclaimed objective in the middle of the board - a box labelled 'heart of lOrkan in here' and head off to claim it.

The Ice Spirits claim the lives of a couple of Knights of Order, and slay two more in combat, holding their ground against all odds against the now badly-diminished Daedra. The Dragon kills three cultists, but the Sorcerer priest nicks him with a bound dagger, causing a wound back. The cultists flee, though, just barely escaping the pursuing Dovah. Alduin murders and then runs down the whole unit of crossbowmen he was facing, slaying them with relative ease.

The cultists continue to flee, resurrecting more of their fallen comrades as they go. The remaining Knights of Order slay two Ice Wraiths, but not before one of them - rimed in frost - is felled by them. Jyggalag, tired of trying to regenerate wounds with the touch of Order, cuts down the remaining Knights of the Nine and Magus with comparative ease (the critical strike ability is pretty useful). The Skeletons remain very much undead, although their 'hit the Daedric Prince with your bow' strategy has proved less than effective.

The Dragoons hurtle forward, claiming the objective with ease, and then wait there, their Radiant AI caught in some valourous, self-sacrificing loop. The crossbowmen fire on Alduin, but to little effect - they're too few in number and too poorly placed at this point to contribute much.

The Skeletons desultorily punch Jyggalag with their bony fists, before being cut down (netting Jyggalag an extra wound from Touch of Order. The Lesser Dragon drives the Order Cultists off the board, while the lone Knight of Order finally slays the ice wraith. Alduin, realising that it's pretty much closing time in this game, heads to the objective, but, with his thu'um recharging, there's not much he can do.

Turn 6: Jyggalag turns, smites a dragoon with Voidscream Lightning (that miraculously, yet again, fails to wound), and charges into combat along with the remaining Knight of Order. The Daedric Prince kills 3 Dragoons, the remainder of whom strike down the Prince's Daedric Servant, more out of spite than anything else. They remain in combat until the Imperial turn, when the Prince of Order guts the other three … and is charged by Alduin. Surprisingly, Alduin manages another couple of wounds on Jyggalag, taking him down to 2 in total, while Jyggalag inflicts the same back. The game ends with the two struggling for supremacy atop the objective - while Jyggalag is the better fighter, it's too close to call ...

Generally, I think the whole game went pretty well. There were a few rough edges, but that's to be expected given the experimental nature of the game - we had a lot of fun, and a lot of the problems probably came from the fact that it's a combination of several game types, and we were playing with a lot of models on a very small board. A few things do strike me, though, as general thoughts:

- 'At the start of each phase' things really need to be sorted out, especially in games with more than two players. We forgot to run it this way, but Alduin's storm call could probably have cleared the entire board by going off eight times before his next turn rolls around.

- Do we go for Warhammer style 'a roll of 6 always wounds', or 40k style 'if toughness is high enough, you can't wound'? I think probably the latter, given the number of high toughness entities and the restrictions of heavy weaponry.

- I don't know how to deal with this, but atm it feels like each army's 'super units' can pretty effortlessly tear through enemy forces - big infantry blocks (especially for Imperials) can get pretty easily torn apart by the latest spell-buffed, template spewing, ward-save-having unit du jour. Maybe allow more ranks to attack, or add some incentives (free command, etc) for having large units?

The Daedra Cult seem to be working pretty well. The Cultists are fragile magical powerhouses (and the Obelisk of Order ability is hilarious if annoying). The Knights of Order were tough and pretty decent in combat, with their high WS being particularly impressive. The Daedroths didn't get stuck in, although they absorbed a vast amount of fire (the Third Barrier ability is great) - I feel that they might be worth a few too many points?

Jyggalag strode around slaughtering everything, and would probably have done so even more if he hadn't been trying to recover his wounds and be cautious. He could possibly do with a points boost - even though he's a more purely combat-focused character than the king of dragons, the fact that he costs less points than Alduin and still came close to murdering him in a single turn speaks volumes to his killy power. His magic could do with a switch around, though - currently Voidscream Lightning is a bit underwhelming, given its high cost - maybe he should have Lightning Storm/Oblivion Lightning instead?

The Dragons, I think, had a pretty rough time of it - they essentially got trapped between the Imperials and the Daedra, and got hammered because of it. That said, I think that their shouts were shown to be utterly lethal, especially since they (unlike, say, the Siege Crawler) have the mobility to place the templates to give enfilading fire. The Ice Wraiths were pretty horrifying, too - I think they could possibly do with a points boost? 5 of them can absolutely massacre an enemy unit; maybe make them 30pts/model and give them stealth, or something?

Dragon-wise, it did strike me that they're in need of a few buffs - once they get caught in combat, they do get ground down pretty easily (maybe replace their ability to fly out of combat with hit and run, so they can do it multiple times?), so they might do with being made a bit harder on an individual basis, and costing a bit more. I think if I was playing with them again, I'd probably want to move them around as a virtual unit to make sure they didn't get outnumbered and worn down, which feels strange. Alduin probably needs slightly better defences - a 6+ ward save really doesn't cut it against some of the other things in his point range - and even though it didn't come up, I think some sort of healing shout might help even things out between the factions too.

Skeletons were men of the match, btw. I think a more Dragur heavy list would be interesting, as it would be pretty damn tough.
