The thing is that it is one of the best systems out there. Otherwise you will have shit like Hearhtstone, Shadowverse and Vanguard that locks you to a single archetype/clan/color.
Mtg mana system allows for the player to go as wide as he wants, while penalizing him accordingly.
Without to mention that having lands allows player to control better their own tempo, and the chances of actually bricking due to lands-related problems are so low, that is not a major problem considering what you gain from it.>Commander format
I think if a new game wants to settle in, it really needs to see what went right with commander. Commander is to Mtg, the same thing Dota is to Wow. A subgame made with the assets of the original game that gained so much popularity you could say it's almost its own game.
