yeah dude, i generally did care, if your just reducing him to "mentally ill" your missing why he was followed.
His story is interesting and he had a good soul. He strived and worked hard and led a high acheiving life prior to schizophrenia. But the beauty is in how during these times he created meaning in his life by building an operating system. He fought against something in an amazingly creative way. He was also self aware of this at various times.
He himself was a proof of concept. Proof of the individual and his duty to a higher intellect. What he did in creating that operating system (regardless of its industrial application value) was amazing.
He showed that in dire circumstances one can focus their energys into their gifts and create something never been done before. He was true to the very end in his passion about sharing his knowledge and opinions on topics he cared and knew about. He was appreciative of his followers and aware of what society thinks of the mentally afflicted.
If you really don't see the beauty in his story your soulless.
I just dont understand how one could not understand how people would find him to be a fascinating character and while certainly not a role model a pecuilar source of inspiration
