To be fair, the state of anime movies isn't great. We once had Ghibli (which has now pretty much closed shop) or Satoshi Kon (who is dead), or Oshii (who seems to have given up). Previous other great movies seem to be one offs. They were all in the 00s, the 10s have been pretty unimpressive.
Now we have Shinkai and Hosoda leading the pack. Shinkai's movies are always fucking melodramatic considering how little actually happens in them and Hosoda's films bug me with how often he repeats himself, I liked Tokikake but after that the pattern became tiring.
It's nice that Your Name and Koe no Katachi are pretty big deals this year, though, I can't pass judgement, I've not seen either of them yet.
All the other lesser anime movies tend to be pretty poor. That recent Anthem of the Heart movie for example didn't impress me at all. It's funny how Masayoshi Tanaka seems to have cornered the market for movie character designs.
