Ferrets are really fun pets, I love them. They are quite active and playful, but they also sleep a lot too (~18 hours/day.)
As for pooping, they do poop a lot. They are litter trainable but to what extent depends on the individual ferret. Most of it comes from taking advantage of the fact that they really only like to poop in corners, and placing a litter box in their favorite corner, rewarding them for using it.
They do have a musk, but if they are fed a quality diet, NOT over-bathed (ferrets don't really NEED baths unless they get into something nasty; they shouldn't be bathed more than once a month at most!,) and their litter is scooped often and their bedding washed frequently, the smell isn't that strong compared to what you might think. Ferret musk itself isn't necessarily even a "bad" smell, it's just...particular. Many ferret owners grow to like the smell. Most don't mind it.>do they enjoy the company of humans or do their own thing?
Yes and yes. They're very interactive and playful but they usually don't exactly "hang out with" you like a dog would, if that makes any sense? They're super social and will come see you and play with you, etc. But they also really just want to run around and explore and stuff. Some ferrets are pretty cuddly, but others not so much. It depends on the ferret.
