Ultimately though, there's no issue with 'blackifying' a character so long as they're not a vocal opponent of, say, I dunno', a white person cosplaying Kitara from Avatar, a character that's clearly meant to be Asian regarding some historical series, or that one Pokemon gym leader by claiming it to be 'whitewashing'. That's only because then it makes them a hypocrite, and the fact they are a minority does not make what they're doing anymore okay then the first.
I get the idea of empowerment, but, again, I can't buy the hypocrisy they're showing in that, empowerment aside, they've done it because they just genuinely enjoy the character, right? Exactly. So, it's bothersome the inability the realize that the opposite has happened for the same reason: loving the character.
The empowerment part resulting from feeling marginalized in franchise character design doesn't make it more or less wrong then the other side.
Now some black bad cosplay because race doesn't make this cosplay not terrible.
