There was a time when I thought John K and the many people he inspired to follow his style were cool for the style they had. I think what I really liked, in retrospect, was Bob Clampett's wacky elastic psycho undertones, more than John K's bastardization up to eleven and his mentee's mockery of even that. These days I notice a lot of cartoon kiddies making art which is clearly very inspired by John K, often mixed with some "old school" screwball (and often grossout) aesthetic, but really it's said screwball aesthetic filtered through the lens of John K's philosophy itself filtered through the lens of his earlier followers. And I've come to find all of it so repetitive and unoriginal. None of these people have anything going for them beyond this one-dimensional aesthetic. They suck at writing, they suck at jokes, and they can't portray anything outside of the narrow limits of the John K imitation. John K himself is similarly very limited and one-dimensional. It's already sad that John tears into so much other animation media, and sadder that I once took him more seriously. I used to think he had a point. Now I realize, sometimes when he did have a point, he was failing to make additional points about what's good in animation, because he would fail on those metrics himself, catastrophically even. But his little troupe of followers are even worse. I've also seen many of his followers copy John's disdain for anything different, including stuff very similar to themselves, but also anything that does things in some other style, be it calarts, animesque, whatever have you. These people aren't just bad at what they do and incredibly limited, but they're annoying too.
