I always saw it as being kinda superficial desu. He only really knew this girl for like a week, and despite whining for years that all he'd need to be a happy is a girl that loves him, he still acted like the same old Charlie Brown. Even while the two were "dating" Charlie still fantasized about the Little Red-Haired Girl, as well.
If I'm being honest, what Charlie needs isn't someone to baby him and put up with his nonsense (like he wants), but a girl that will both love him sincerely and actively push him into being a better person. It's hard to say which girl matches that description in the comic strip best. If I had to guess, I think Schulz clearly writes Peppermint Patty to be the proper alternative to Charlie's unrealistic fantasies (pic related).
