fairly certain it's my low GPA (<5). Recruiters used to come to the uni and give hints on what they look for in candidates, and I fell for the "we don't really look at your GPA" meme, they emphasised extracurriculars like uni societies and part-time work were more important, but there were at least two programs I couldn't apply for because I didn't have the requisite GPA.
Engineering recruitment is shit, you lodge an application which automatically includes gamification aptitude tests and a virtual interview, all those are run through a HR program that awards points based on your answers, I'm betting that includes the diversity questions they claim are only for statistical analysis. Then your final interview is ranked alongside your GPA, job history, and gamification results. Hell, the one-on-one interviews that I got didn't even have someone who knows how to do my job, just a HR representative asking me how I can contribute to diversity and inclusiveness of the company.
