Nope, this is what really happened in 1980. Don't forget that south korea was full scale military dictatorship back then. They had military coup just before that and country was under martial law.
People were not happy about that, and protested. So rok govt sent military and started shooting at protesters. Well, this was bad idea, as this made people so fucking pissed off, that they raided police armouries and arsenals arming themselves with shitton of surplus M1 garands and M1 carabines, formed thay actually formed >well organised militias
and took control over the Gwangju city.
Well, then south korean military govt sent five army divisions with heavy equipment and killed the fuck out of them, becasue roof koreans courage is still poor match against the tanks and regular army.
South korean military govt at first claimned that the rebels were filthy commies, but this was pure bullshit and everybody knew it. And while the uprising was crushed, it became a symbol of resistance against the already unpopular regime, and - long story short - few years later the military regime sputtered and died without much bang, and democracy was kinda-sorta restored. The rebels were fully rehabilitated in 1995, and people responsible were tried and found guilty as all fuck. But then they were all pardoned because muh old wounds and muh reconcilliation.
