I'd argue that X3 was a misfire and X5 was half-baked but otherwise I agree
As for X7 and X8 just skip X7, it's actually far worse than X6. At least with X6 there's still some of what you liked about X4 and 5 even if it's mostly dogshit and there's some fun to be had out of breaking the game
X7 is genuinely a waste of time, it's slow and boring and you can't play as X until you meet certain requirements so you're stuck with Axl who is just X but sucks and a Zero that's terrible to play as
X8 is fairly fun and makes each of the hunters feel unique enough to warrant replaying stages with different Hunter combos though it relies on gimmicks to make each stage standout so your mileage may vary on whether you think they're good or not
