“You are the single greatest thing that has ever happened to this hive, to its subjects… to me…” Chrysalis continues meekly. “Your love knows no bounds, no discrimination or hatred towards my lings. It’s the purest love we’ve ever had.”> The queen’s head sinks to absentmindedly look in the folds of the delicate bedcloth.
“A whole born queen is made to rule, beloved. Ever since my… growth spurt, I have felt the emotions of the other queens. A regular queen can not sense it, but an almighty ruler must know of internal threats and upsets.”> Anonymous carefully places his hands on either side of her muzzle, and bring her up to face him again.> “What frightens you, honey?”> Chrysalis does not look him in the eyes as she recalls the vileness of her fellow queens.
“They know of you. They know of your unending love for me. They know of you constitution, of how your love has no end. And they fear me. Their heads are clouded with thoughts of queenslaying, jealousy and most of all, maddening fear. They want you for themselves, enthralled to their hives.”> The human begins carefully stroking her face in slow and methodical patterns.
“I… I am afraid, Anonymous”, she says, quivering. “The first whole born queen in millennia… I am so afraid of losing you,” she continues. “I had the behemoths ordered to stand guard in every corridor leading to this inner sanctum. You would not notice them, for they are hidden even from the hive mind.”> The human’s slow petting stops.> The changeling queen heaves an empty chortle.
“Behemoths are beasts of war, beloved. Employing two or three of them to protect a hive is unorthodox but still justifiable... Having so many to guard a single being is sin…” Her voice trails off.
