Why does Russian music use backbeats? I've noticed this a lot while listening to Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky. In Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony (4th movement) he even has a rhythm shockingly similar to a modern triplet rock beat, with the exact same stresses. Did this influence the development of the American backbeat or were they independent? Stravinsky did come to America well before the development of our backbeats.
