I read somewhere that Nick didn't like how the fingerstyle sounded whilst clashing with the singing on "Place to Be", that's why it ended up being a strummed song. To my ear however, it's as good if not better fingerstyle. There's another version of this fingerstyle Place To Be on youtube somewhere, it's a much a clearer recording than the one that appears when you search "Place To Be Fingerstyle", and has such crisp guitar playing and Nicks voice is crystal clear, but it's only a minute long. There's a rumour that an unofficial LP with the full recording exists, but it's like rocking horse shit. It sounds like a romanticised folktale, but it's the truth and the Drake estate confirms this. My guess is that they have the full recording in their collectiom somewhere and haven't thought of releasing it to the public. Shame really, to me this small clip of a man playing his soul out is his towering masterpiece. Lyrically and acoustic arrangement wise.
I've been hesitant to post this because I was looking for the version, and after a good half an hour, I've managed to find the cut version of the piece in question, enjoy:https://youtu.be/lnPvR_iKafA
(If anyone has the version I am referring to (not the fuzzy home recording that appears when searching this song on youtube, but the crisp and clear version of this fingerstyle), please share it. I've tried contacting the Nick Drake estate but they haven't replied as of yet. If it does turn out that they have the full version, I will update you guys!
