Just read Scaruffi's full article on the Beatles
> They were commercial
> They were not very innovative
> They did not promote social change, weren't rebellious
> Their lyrics didn't make many statements
> They weren't virtuosos with their instruments
> They wrote songs in a conventional manner
> They aren't quite as influential on music as one might think
Sure. Sure sure sure.
But here's the thing:
They sound fucking good.
Their music sounds fucking good, for the majority of listeners. It makes people happy and fulfilled. It's high-quality entertainment.
It's not nothing. On the contrary, it's the main objective, the core, and the rest is optional bonuses.
You can't write this off as "they just wrote good melodies and sung well". It's kinda like saying "He's not really good at chess, he just makes turns that improve position and win material".
Or at least, that's my perspective.
