>>2243970It's mentioned above, but the main character falls completely flat. There's no motivation for Wade to do any of this stuff, whereas Sam has a cliche, but understandable reason to fight back. The irony of fleshing her character out more in the movie is that it completely shows how bad Wade's character is.
It's like Cline watched The Last Starfighter, enjoyed the trailer park setting...and failed to realize that Alex Rogan is relatable because his future, like a lot of others, is completely uncertain. Alex can't get into college, his mom relies on him like a crutch, and the ONLY thing he's good at is a damn game. But what happens when that game turns out to be the one thing that will save the world? Ready Player One doesn't have that build up or twist, it's just "I followed this guy and no one knows him better than me". It feels more like a gloating contest than an attribute.
I don't know how they're gonna do a sequel. Everything is kind of squared off. But, they've got to make sure Wade has some kind challenge. Maybe have his status questioned. I think it'd be cool if the entire sequel deconstructs the first movie...but yeah...that's not gonna happen.
