If I read a news article about 100 people dead in say, Africa, then I won't actually feel sad about it.
Obviously I can make the logical connection that it is a shame that people die needlessly but it will be a very quick thought and it won't stick with me.
Why? Because I have zero connection to these people and because I know absolutely nothing about them I can't actually care about their deaths.
You are exactly the same. If you have no connection to someone that dies all the way over the world, you won't dwell on it more than a passing thought and there is no shame in admitting this.
It is exactly the same reason why people care more for their countrymen despite knowing just as little about them as the guy from Africa.
