I remember very clearly that I was walking from the locker room before gym, and my friend was talking to one of his friends about DBZ. I asked what they were talking about, and my friend said, "This show called Dragon Ball Z. It's from Japan." to which I replied, "Oh like Pokemon?" and began to laugh. He got mad and said, "No! And I don't care about the story! I only watch it for the fights!"
Back then, we might have still been saying "Japanimation", and anyone who liked anime would get made fun of for being "a gayford who likes Pokemon". Sometimes I really hate my "It's cool to not care about anything" generation.
I wouldn't end up watching DB until the sometime the next year. My cousin's family had come over to visit on Winter break, and my cousin bought a copy of Budokai. That got me interested in the story and eventually watching the series.
