I would never have been hyped for Fairy Tail as a kid the way I did for DB
His series feels like an excuse to shove fanservice at you with some over-sentimentality ala One Piece/Naruto(but not as obnoxious). Nothing wrong with that but DB was never that much about sentimentality and even the fanservice was pretty minimal if not for Toei inserting more filler scenes in the anime(and even then nowhere even near FT or EZ).
I never could get into his works. 1 example I can give is the Oracion Seis arc, he hypes all these enemies only to then just skip them or easily defeat them or whatever with no fanfare(I can't remember what exactly happened because it was so disappointing). Toriyama would never pull something like that.
His manga don't have the sense of pure innocent fun Toriyama's do.
Like I said, I respect the shit out of Mashima for his work ethic and the way he's been able to keep the quality of his work and even the artwork has gotten better despite him having been at it for almost as long as Oda now, but the comparison to Toriyama ain't it chief.
I would compare him to Araki for his work ethic and consistency.
