That might be it but I also think it's just a consequence of western media becoming increasingly terrible.
I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with getting into it later in life. My older brother only got into it the past two years and he's becoming coming to me for recommendations since he wants to have broader tastes than the front page of Crunchyroll. It's only really annoying when people get into it than immediately start complaining about shit like fanservice and how this medium should actually be something completely different.

Yes I think this is mainly driven by my distaste for Western culture right now. It's a reactionary thing. Even without considering all the DEI bullshit which I'm not gonna get into, there's something about that quippy, self-conceited style of writing in Western media right now I find unbearable. Someone opens his mouth and it feels like torture, it's not clever, it's not interesting, it doesn't even sound like anything a human being would ever say or write, who the fuck gives the OK to this shit? I don't understand how every single Western show sounds and feels exactly the same like it's always the same goddamn blue-haired, sheltered Californian cunt writing all of it while high on his own farts. I hate it too much, I couldn't stomach anything Western made in the last 10 years. People recommend me shit all the time, I watch 2 lines of dialogue and I fucking drop it.
Anime and Asian media in general are very trope-driven but at least it's character types that have some humanity. I wish there were more drama and less martial arts cause I got fucking tired of people punching each other 10 years ago. I even watched some shoujo and yuri shit but the strictly female perspective wears me down fast.
I grew up with anime as a kid and I think anime is more interesting right now. I think they're trying to make stuff that's more interesting to older people as well, not just children. I'm fond of my memories of coming home from school and watching HNK but that shit's fucking unwatchable now.
