That's dub only. I don't think the movies and anime ever truly portray Goku as a paragon of justice. They suck his dick a little more sometimes, like, when he transforms to beat up Cooler he also gets to revive a bird before that. It's not that Manga Goku wouldn't do that if he had the power to but that whole scene is a bit... heavier than what you'd expect the manga to do, it wouldn't happen in it. So basically:

Manga Goku
>reasonably heroic, will help people in need, avenge innocents and everything
>cares for his son, family and friends, but can also disappear for years sometimes (like other DB characters)
>lack of education but actually one of the smartest characters in the cast if you pay attention. Can drive and do normal adult stuff

Anime/movie Goku
>will help the same people as he always does but it's usually played up, like he's the big hero and so on
>inconsistent characterization: sometimes will engage in cheesier emotional moments he wouldn't normally, sometimes will be neglectful and stupid, usually a lot dumber
>manga is way better but it works

Superku

The problem is that even if JP Anime Goku didn't go half as far as Dub Goku that was still too much for Toriyama's sensibilities.
Honestly I think the worst of the bunch of Wrath of the Dragon where Gohan just straight-up jobs despite him having to be stronger than Goku at the moment, the cringe-ass "If I don't do it then who will" line like if everyone else was not desperately fighting too, and the Dragon Punch into victory pose fist raised up to show you how fucking cool Goku is and how Goku is the HERO and no one else is.
The Cooler bird thing is more of a "wut" kind of thing because of how random and out of place it is.

Honestly I have no issue with that line, it's a nice "my back is against the wall, I HAVE to do it because if I don't no one will" moment. Other than this and the bird I don't really think Toei truly made Goku much more of a hero. If anything they made him more of an idiot.

He really is, I'm disappointed. Emperor Pilaf, despite leaning heavily into comedy relief, had a lot of agency. He was well balanced and entertaining, not so with Gomah. Also, they're taking way too long to do much with him either. It should be every other episode, the narrative jumps back and forth between the demon antagonists and Goku with his friends, so we can get to know all the characters better. All this time spent looking at Glorio fail to get Goku to say his name, Goku needing to shit himself and Goku beating up demon policemen, feels really wasted

Hell, Daima hasn’t even explained what Super Saiyan is despite the two times they’ve made a spectacle of Goku using it. If this is meant for kids and to get them into Dragon Ball, then Toriyama really lost his touch. Even Heroes knew how to ease newcomers and kids in better.
