The Pilaf Saga almost got the manga axed. It wasn't until the tournament that it actually got popular. Same shit when the show came state-side. Kids weren't interested in the Pilaf Saga, so early efforts to bring DB to the West ended in failure. Once they showed Z, everything changed and the IP finally found immense popularity in the West.

No dub is great. DBZ's was marginally good in a time where it was normal to fuck with and rewrite episodes to make them less japanesey (something Saban was no stranger to). And due to the volume of the series, the dub ended production in a time where replacing music was seen as unacceptable censorship.
There were lots of dumb things Funimation stuck with and a few misconceptions the fans had that weren't correct at all. There was hardly any profanities in the translation at all, but people thought there were tons due to the old scratchy fansubs that put a bunch in on their own.
My biggest problem was the whole series kept the same gratuitous grunting and groaning of characters with every cut to a reaction shot. This was done because the primary audience was going to be preteen children, and people like Saban consider kids to be retards who have to constantly feel engaged or else they'll change the channel. Nobody accounted for teens growing up with the show or the original audience of kids aging with it, meanwhile still having the same "HNGH?" "UH?" grunts put in by Funimation to remind them of how stupid they're considered to be.
And yeah, Kikuchi's soundtrack is way better in a lot of ways. The beep-boop synthesizers saturate the dub's audio because, like I've said, children had to feel engaged or they'd change the channel because they have no agency and don't really enjoy things.
Anyway, much an oldfag as I am, the older I get the more pathetic dubfags from my generation seem. You motherfuckers are probably at or past 40 and you still defend this shit because it stuck a finger in your ass when you were 11, but compassionately. You're no better than rape victims.
