And yes, the reason as to why human beings act illogically sometimes is BECAUSE WE CAN. That is the only reason, we are physically capable to, at least given the context of his question. An example.
"A man is given a choice between infinite happiness, or infinite sadness and he chooses infinite sadness. Everybody gets the same choice when they die."

"He thought he deserved to suffer because he did bad things to people once."
