Pride isn't bad in most other ways though, in fact it was something considered to be a virtue. This is true in Celtic, Nordic, Greek, Roman (even the nongreek Roman bits) and many other religions. That's why, for example, Beowulf is such a braggart, because Pride was an aspect of Heroism and it was nothing he couldn't back up. If you can do something or have done something, you deserve to take pride in it!
Hubris is what was bad and to be avoided, in much the same way it is good to be Brave but bad to be Reckless.
