For me at least, characters are foundation of a show. Good comedy or drama don't mean anything to me if I am annoyed by or feel indifferent towards most of the cast.

You can think that if you want, but it's wrong. If Naruto is level 0 newfag and Death Note is level 1, Code Geass would be level 2. Most of the people who've seen it and claim its great haven't seen shit to begin with and think the drama and action are superb when they're utter cheese. Then they recommend it to their other newfag friends and thats how a show gets big.

And for the record I got around to watching Death Note last summer and thought it was great.

Actually, the framework behind the whole plot makes a lot of sense in retrospect. It's surprisingly predictable once you figure out the main point. Plus you really have to be missing something if you're taking everything too seriously in the first place.
