Maybe I'm just an isolated case, but I've learned all that I know without using flashcards, textbooks or taking Japanese classes. I can read most Japanese just fine. I don't feel like I forget words more often than anyone else. It usually takes 2~3 individual encounters with a word for it to be permanently engraved in my mind.

It is all about getting used to being busy. I used to be like you but then I spent a year with a much worse schedule than I now have. Just set a minimum amount of work and make it in a way that it will build up slowly enough that it won't scare you away. I started anki about two months ago with a Genki I deck and Kanjidamage and now have many decks and reviews for both Japanese and Esperanto.
