I'd imagine the split of /jp/ and /a/ was a big deal when it happened, sadly, or perhaps luckily, I came on /a/ not long after it happened, and thus witnessed the steady decline of vn discussion, even if it never died out.
I think things might get a bit better if our chosen medium of interest, primarily anime, had more shit to bring in peeps from /tg/ and late night or morning /k/, who as far as I've seen tend to be vastly more civil and intelligent in conversation. Case in point, no one on /tg/ bitches about summer coming. And the only community on /k/ that seems to be shit is the afterschool stormfront/COD kiddies, but most of them think they're "too cool for anime" anyway, so they wouldn't bother with /a/ in the first place.
