Here is the thing, The World is a fully realised virtual dimension, complete with simulated weather, actual temperature differences, and things have SCENT.
But the trick is, the Player Characters don't KNOW this. They only have a gamepad and a head-mounted display with visual and audio. The fact that there is such a thing as temperature difference and that perfumes can be sniffed, is entirely undetactable to human players. Only the virtual AIs who live there and humans unfortunate enough to be trapped there, see The World as it truly is.
In short, The World is very high tech and realistic, but people who treat it like a normal MMO would never see it. They would just see a low resolution version of the real thing.
