Good is subjective though. That was my initial point, that you cannot objectively say what does or does not degrade a character. You can feel something degrades a character but it is wrong to assume everyone will think that way because the way you reach that conclusion is subjective. So you are saying that the canon characters are types and that each instance is a token? I think you are looking at it the wrong way. I would still consider each instance something very separate rather than tokens of the same type.
