Why did Nasu and Urobuchi retcon Kirei's backstory?
In Kirei's original HF backstory we were told about how he was consciously aware of his evil nature and was desperately trying to change. In fact he did physical torture just to punish himself from being evil.
The beginning of the Zero LN instead portrayed him as a guy, who lost his wife a few days prior, was searching for a purpose and pleasure his whole life but was unable to find it and was actually inflicting physical torture on himself in search of a big purpose for his life.
In fact the role his wife plays is quite different as well between both works. In the original we saw that Kirei was going to commit sucide because of failing to change and her death there made him realize that he can't die since her sacrifice would be waste but he actually can't change as well and this eventually made him accept his nature and indulge in evil at some point.
The Zero novel instead shows that the death of his wife was the first time he became properly aware of his evil nature. He had a whole big panic attack remembering how he painstakingly realized his true nature after his wife died in front of him and he got a big urge to kill her but he simply decided to toss that whole memory away and refused to reflect on it due to how abhor it was to him and that's how he was in the state we saw him in FZ.
