The way people on /a/ harp on about him makes him seem like the biggest moustache twirler going, but there's genuinely a lot to unpack when it comes to his motivations and morality. All throughout, he was clearly conflicted in regards to his actions and wondered if it was okay to be so cruel for the sake of achieving his dream.
What really sells it for me is something I'm surprised more people don't bring up, after the Eclipse begins and and the Godhand are summoning him he saves Guts from plummeting to his death. Even at rock bottom he retained enough humanity to save his friend.
