Not to hijack your post, but I don't understand why people call Sayaka an idiot for the wish she made, or having a flawed sense of justice. It's not that she was an idiot, it was that she was a typical middle schooler with a typical middle schooler mindset.
Homura was hardened by enduring countless time loops, Kyouko had grown accustomed to the rugged life of a vagabond, and Mami's family was killed in a car accident, from which spawned her wish. She and Madoka were the only two that encompassed your average preteen girl, hence why their wishes were either insignificant (saving the cat) or flawed in some way (healing kyousuke's hand, but really wanting his affection)
