For example in Penguindrum, it really saddens me how people don't understand what the boxes represent. They explained it explicitly at least two times in the show. First, Sanetoshi is talking directly to the viewer (facing and looking right at you) and explaining it. Then Shouma thinks aloud about how life can be like living in a box. I'm not sure if maybe it was the subs that were unclear or people just weren't paying attention or what, but there was no reason to be confused at all (people keep asking if Shouma and Kanba were literally left caged in a box in a dark room or not... seriously??? same with the Child Broiler)
