Now I want you to cast your mind back to two scenes from the series. The first is Sayakas transformation into a witch, remind you of anything? and the second is to the conversation Kyubey has with Madoka in episode 9.
Kyubey states that the transformation of a Soul Gem into a Grief Seed releases tremendous energy. Note, Soul Gem into a Grief Seed, NOT Magical Girl into a Witch.

In conclusion, I believe that Homura used the incredible power generated by her own Soul Gem transforming into Grief Seed to split off the power of Madoka after having already acclimating herself to being a witch, allow her to retain her ego during the process.
