The high school music festival. People complain about the Yakuza arc but at least it was an arc with an actual villain that had some sort of confrontation. Even if it was bog-standard shonen it was still leagues better than the music festival that followed it right after and the chapters (emphasis on "chapters") of character introductions we got with people who would have zero relevancy for anything at all later on. It never really recovered from there.

also entire chapters dedicated to VILLAINS backstory. You've already established the league as some of the scummiest types of villains around. They're willing to launch a terrorist attack on a school and hurt kids for the sake of "burning it all down".
But now because they have a vaguely tragic backstory they're supposed to be redeemable.

I can't even remember 70% of the hero cast, much less their own backstories or drives. There's like 3 maybe who have any depth beyond (name/super power gimmick). It's kind of ass-backwards that the villains are more defined than any of the heroes, which begs the question of why this wasn't a story focused on the villains to begin with.

The school setting is mandatory for the Japanese audience and for Hori to get the green light but it crippled MHA's potential from the very start.
The more shit that happens with the adults outside of school the better. But it's dragged on long enough that people just lose interest.

Obviously you couldn't make all of them out to be anti-heroes or protags. There would have to be gray areas and people who are clearly worse than the protags for it to be interesting. But that's not really the point I'm making: it feels like the villains are more focused on and characters than the actual main cast of heroes. It doesn't work at all in BnHA.

The entire idea of him being terrified he's not a real person and he's one of the doubles was a great way to use his power and the moment where he gets his arm broken and realises he's real is definitely one of the highest emotional peaks in the manga, considering how his copies explode everywhere.

The villains are better written than the heroes. That's not saying much, but they are.

Sometime in the last decade or so as shipping moved from "would like it if these two characters got together" to "demand that these two characters get together or else it's time to riot". As part of doing that, they spend so much time on fanfiction and headcanons that they forget what's actually canon. One of the results being that crack ships go from something that people know will never happen but like anyways, to something that they think could actually happen.

The issue's not so much teenagers fighting for the fate of their world, that's pretty normal for shounen. The problem is that the very premise of the series is that the students need to go to hero high school to get the necessary training to be effective heroes. Yet the way the series had done things, it's turned out that all they really needed was a few months of interning under some decent professional heroes. Professional heroes that most of the class are theoretically still beneath in power and skill.

Well the antagonism between "never cross the line" and "The Lesser Evil". The eternal discussion between Batman and the anti heroes. I think they are both right and wrong at the same time.

It feels forced because Shiggy is a completely awful host body. There is no reason to select someone this damaged, childish and unreasonable, he doesn't even have a good body and never did, his dry skin had him scarred even in childhood and he's lost fingers and is covered in more and worse scars. I realize AFO currently can't see and can barely breathe, but you'd think he'd still have better standards than this for his ultimate body.
