This is wrong, though. And that's why the ending was shit in a way. He truly wanted Paradis and their descendants to be free.
But yeah, you could somehow headcanon a justifoction for his stupidity by assuming he couldn't see the future beyond his own lifespan since there was no more Eldians/Titans after his death.

One Piece has some terrible spreads with STRONG NEN!? and reactions, but it doesn't ruin its own plot like those other series

Did he? He could have had that if he just killed everyone outside the island, but he chose not to. Seems to me like he didn't value the freedom of their descendants all that much, or maybe he just had misplaced trust in Armin's ability to solve the situation.
