Retconning him into an alien soldier like they did on Z was a terrible decision but people kind of forgave it because super saiyans are the shit. That said, we all know the point of Z was to pass the mantle to Gohan but Toriyama got cold feet in the end. That´s the reason the Boo saga felt like a wet number 2.
Someone obviously noticed and had the "brilliant" idea of mixing the DB adventures with DBZ aliens and so GT happened. Sure, that works in theory but there is no point to meaningless adventures if they don´t transform the characters. My point is one could keep making DB stuff essentially forever but it would be meaningless because the character development has ran it´s course. They are now on an infinite loop of repeating what the original DB already did, establish that, no matter how big the world/universe gets Goku is the strongest. Super, Daima, super hero... all pointless stuff.
