Nickelodeon needed a show to fill a time slot, so they pulled Jenny off the high shelf and asked Rob Renzetti if he wanted the gig.
That's it. Your girl was a place holder. A leg brace. A patch job.
Nickelodeon did not expect the popularity that show got, having had no desire or intention of maximizing on the IP. And they would not be made to look dumb, let alone allow fans to deter thier predetermined plans.
Even when Jenny beat Zim in an online poll the network held, Zim was declared the winner. Jenny was never part of the plan.
So Jenny got the death slots.
And Nickeldeon's spiral of poor/lazy/pandering decision making continued.
But the fans never forgot, and in time a new generation of fans zoned in on Jenny, leading to the robutt/waifu/autism threads of today.
