Kristen Bell (his Frozen co-star) happened to be one of them. Her instant casting probably barred a lot of black actresses from having even the slightest chance at landing that role, but Bell still proved her worth through both her line reading and singing for Molly.
Kristen Bell is a big name to help headline a new musical comedy, but the creators will probably have to keep answering for this controversial decision as more and more people learn of the show, like how Loren Bouchard had to answer for John Roberts and Dan Mintz's roles on Bob's Burgers even though they both nail their roles.
Animation is a medium where literally anyone can voice any type of character, but it's best not to gatekeep major roles for "friends." Everyone deserves a fair chance at the audition.
