Miles says that if Jaune were ever in a situation where he couldn't use his weapons that he would up using boxing and judo that was taught to him by Pyrrha. I vaguely remember Monty saying that Yang knew boxing and muay thai. Mercury probably knows taekwondo and kickboxing.
And Ironwood definitely knows krav maga, sambo, and boxing considering he still did pretty well against JNR+Oscar/Winter. I wonder how Weiss fights without her weapon. Would she finally stop standing still like a retard and summoning or would she learn ju jitsu and start doing submissions on people? Would she learn how to be a striker and somehow find a way to I incorporate her semblance into it?

But anyway all that says is that Pyrrha is a fantastic trainer if she can turn some civilian with aura into someone who can surpass someone who has actually been training for years before doing Beacon's initations.

In all honesty, I never cared for RWBY even when Monty was alive, but it grew on me. The thing is, being a passive observer who doesn't give a shit about the shipping and the particulars of the setting since he died I think there's been a precipitous drop in the quality of the content.

The way it was told to me Monty's wife was more or less responsible for his death through failing to care for him properly and him being a simp who died of an easily avoidable infection. However, I recently read the Open Letter, which paints a different picture so I don't know what to think on that point.

The thing is, no matter who is responsible or what inter-office politics went on, none of that means that Rooster Teeth is qualified for anything. The more one-note one joke shows they make, the more corporatized they become - and now they've been bought by WB which is like the death of creativity right there - the more overt they've become in their shittiness.

As far as I can tell they're a bunch of drunken, disengenous, profiteer scumbags, and Gus is the worst of it as he's taken a central control of the company and is championing trying to curate their image so people don't catch onto the truth:

They were always small time who got extremely lucky, and now they don't know what to do with themselves. They have to keep producing, they have to keep 'winning' because they're terrified of losing everything, and that means lying through their teeth to everyone and pretending everything is fine.

In truth, I find their behavior similar to that of Team Four Star. From now on I’m gonna keep on asking “why don’t they just use the staff to X”. They really should have put in a time limit on how many times he can create during a length of time. Also while looking up Arthurian legend I’ve found that Merlin’s full name was Merlinus Ambrosius and they swing the staff like a magic wand. Makes me think that might be the origin of Ambrosius’s name.

It's not particularly important but Haven's was a desert. Which I thought was neat; because it was at odds with the maiden it corresponds to; Spring bringing life and all that. Winter, you can arguably say is a time of death so it being a endless field of life is nice. I wonder what they'll do with the other two.

Seems like it, Eddy tweeted that his codename in production was "Merlin-Daddy" so that can only really be one thing in particular. Which then opens up a whole slew of other possibilities.
Staff: Merlin
Sword: Lady of the Lake
Crown: Arthur himself.
But then that leaves Jinn out as the odd one out and not a central figure of Arthurian mythology - she's also possibly the odd one out anyway in that "Jinn" is a very central concept that lot of mythology and folklore has and isn't contained to ONE particular story.

I can see several options for the sword spirit; Izanagi, Muramasa, Suss'ano with the seven branched sword - except for the fact we know what the Sword of Destruction looks like and it isn't particularly Asian inspired. I still don't have a clue what the choice spirit might be; there's no clear link between any of them right now besides "big blue fairies that make bisexuals panic".

Y’know if it’s one mythology per relic, I might go as far to say that Sword of Destruction might be based on the Elderstahl from Nordic mythology. The sword of Surtr that he uses to destroy all of the realms. So maybe the sword’s spirit will actually be male and named Surtr or something. Matches up better than Excalibur in my opinion since Excalibur is a holy sword and wouldn’t be a “sword of destruction” but Surtr’s sword definitely would be.

I started rewatching the whole thing from the beginning because I wanted to take it all in once more, to mark the occasion of Cinder Fall's passing.

It's fascinating; the first season honestly feels like it was made by a completely different staff with completely different ideas on what RWBY should be. And I'm not just talking about budget, I'm talking shot composition, cinematography, the overall tone, pacing.

Really, if the sudden shift in tone from volume 3 and onward was always planned, RT did a magnificent job of hiding it - the first two volumes sometimes feel like the people making it were purposefully fucking around with shit because they could, but after Monty's death the entire production became incomparibly more professional.

It makes me think about what people love about RWBY today; and how much different it is from what it started as. If RWBY today - with the upgrade to the animation, the production values, the proper budget, the quality of the storytelling, everything - is better than what RWBY was before; then it makes me wonder (and I know this sounds awful/heretical) if it would be as good or better if Monty was still alive and in charge of the thing.

Sometimes I think the answer is no.

Problem being that while they have more money and better tools only some things have improved. Background environments and runtime are objectively better but animation quality, choreography are still markedly worse. As for the story elements, the writing and plot is similar in quality but that looks worse when the stakes are higher. The main characters are way more unlikeable as well.
Subjectively, I dislike the artstyle shift too. Before V6 I had hope that they'd be able to have as great fights and characterisation they had before but that's looking increasingly unlikely, so I'm just here to see how it ends and shitpost until then.

RWBY as a show, grew up immensely in every single way except for one critical aspect: The story telling. When it was a shoestring budget, it was charming enough; and much like the rest of the show it felt like amateur's and first timers plodding along and trying to find their footing.

But the writing never caught up or matured like everything else in quality and if anything, began to meander, making the fact it didn't improve like everything else seem that much more obvious. Character to character moments is and always has been what they're best at (see the yang and ruby talk an episode ago) but we don't get them often anymore and it's filling in the gaps of point A to B that they're really not any good at. It's also kind of terrible that the plot has been on rails since the beginning of volume 4 and the story has been nothing but major crisis to major crisis with down time - like in V7 - being reduced to montages with music playing over it.

As it is, Monty made things worse from a writing perspective; he's why we have the maidens - so yeah, on a completely technical level, RWBY is so much better than it ever was. But is it really in the way that matters?

Despite everything, RWBY always has a theming of some kind involved so if it isn't a specific mythology, Jinn being too 'vague' and Merlin too specific, maybe they're going with 'spirits'? I don't think Salem would have EVER allowed the worship of the gods again, which means that he would ultimately need to have immensely different priorities if he stayed with her. The absolute best case scenario for them in that case is that through having children and shit, Salem learns the value of life and death and can finally be released from her curse, Oz then summon the gods and they release him. Oz and Salem proceed to meet in the afterlife while the gods rule over Remnant again as it was before.

You can create so many scenarios as to how the world changed, how long they worked together, if they eventually grew apart, whether they departed under good terms or bad. It's because the writers don't understand how broken an illusionist actually is, especially when said illusionist is a high level fighter even without her ability. Hell, she's probably got one of the most broken Semblances in the whole setting, putting her on the level of Sienna, Adam and Neo in the halls of broken-ass powers.

Actually yeah, wait, what the fuck? This is more than just an "upgrade" this feels like they've fundamentally changed how Emerald's semblance works.
V1-4: Consistent. Requires her to focus for a bit on a person before she can create the illusion. It also has a "whoosh" sound to indicate that it's been activated. There are also signs that indicate it isn't real, i.e dust being kicked up on the dirt road when she Cinder and Merc go to fight Amber.
V5: Same as V1-4 up UNTIL her big mass freak out hallucination.
V6: Didn't see her use it.
V7-8: Said she's been practicing but there's no key sound to indicate that it's activated and she just walks up to YRJ with them seeing that Oscar is actually 'Hazel'. She didn't have to focus on them to activate it. Is she just passively giving off a 'hallucination aura' in a certain range now? The same happens with Ironwood; from his perspective 'Penny' just flies in, but that was clearly the group all in the air ship and there was no keynote to let us know she'd activated it.
Now she basically has Neo's semblance except arguably even stronger.

Emerald's Semblance is May's + Neo's + the ability to protect it over a large area.

It's a flat upgrade over what Neo has, short of Neo's semblance evolving to allow her to have the abilities of the people she copies, I just don't see how she catches up.

iirc they didn't state there being a cost or consequence to using Silver Eyes what-so-ever. I -guess- you could argue that using it fatigues Ruby, but it's headcanon at best. Marie never said anything about there being a drawback when she mentored Ruby in Volume 6, and if there was it's pretty damn important and she would have said something about it right there, so its safe to say there is no drawback.

The only hard requirement to use Silver Eyes is basically "think happy thoughts and want to protect people" Which given Ruby's character and motivations, should be like adding 2+2.

So either Ruby just forgot or she's retarded.

Not sure if it's just me or not, but for a setting that puts a large emphasis on emotions (rebellion over trying to suppress art and emotions, Huntsmen/Huntresses setting an example by being le quirky and crazy, being optimistic to keep the Grimm at bay, etc) the plot brutally punishes actions made based on emotions.

>Salem seethes about Gods and fucks up everything
>Ozma fell in love with Salem again and fucks up everything more
>Yang fights angrily and not smartly and gets arm chopped off
>Pyrrha does what her heart believed was right and dies
>Jaune's emo phase was painted as a bad thing
>Adam jobs cause he seethed too hard
>Ace Ops jobs cause they seethed too hard
>Robyn and Qrow throws a shitfit and gets Clover killed and Tyrian escapes

There are many more examples but the point is, almost all of RWBY's problems happen cause people made emotional decisions instead of logical ones.

Team RWBY for sure. We already explicitly know that V9 is a "detour" and "unlike anything they've done before" and "planned before even Volume 1" and considering Atlas and Vacuo are now DIRECTLY connected, there's only one possible way it can be a detour. They aren't going to do a whole volume without their title protagonists. So the bigger question is, who's falling with them and why?

Personally I wish it would just be them but I know a volume that's literally just team RWBY by themselves and whatever threats they come across in the god realm is too much to hope for.

Because Neo was a one-off character that got so popular she became a main character. There's nothing wrong with that but as a result Neo gets a fuckload of plot armor and wank to pander to fans.

She's just Roman's lackey who's agile and hits people with an umbrella, theres really nothing special about that yet everybody who fights her forget how to fight and jobs to her.

Her semblance is also the most overloaded semblance in the show, the bitch got like 5 different powers rolled into one, again for pretty much no reason.

Yang is still a beacon student and gets her ass kicked by a hardened criminal, nothing unusual here.

The only fight I'd say Neo was overly wanked in. I'm not a Cinderfag but Cinder should have been able to subdue Neo without having to threaten using her Maiden powers.

Once again, JNR are shitter-tier huntsmen and while Oscar's 5 second yelling punch was stupid, RT is dialing back Neo's competency and actually letting her take hits

shit semblance. Not only is it a crutch that makes the archer/sniper's feats way less impressive, but it's also would have zero visual cues unless we're looking directly from the archer's POV and even if we did seeing holographic arrows/lines everywhere wouldn't be exciting.
