Plus he was never the natural boyscout the same way Supes or Cap were. He always had deep seeded angst and trying to live up to the expectations expected of him as leader and Xavier's prize pupil. He did all he did because he believed in Xavier, but shit like experiencing Apocalypse mindfuck, realizing how much his mentor manipulated him, and the M-Day put them on the back foot, a guy was logically going to break. It was actually quite amazing that such unintentional character growth happened to a high profile character across several writers, and it making sense and sticking for as long as it did.
