meme and end up using raw alsa. In the end it's a frustrating experience. They try to cope by writing scripts but no matter what they do their system is still inferior compared to what they could have if they had just installed pipewire. As a last resort they shit on linux audio and complain about how shit and unusable it is despite this all being their own fault

Alsa is the just the driver layer
I am still using pulseaudio which sits on top of Alsa, and thing works great, not a single problem for 10 years now

>creating null monitors so that I can record specific program outputs

why not pipewire tho, you can still use pacmd and do everything the same way, but with seamless jack integration (everything is duplicated across the server, there is no need for dedicated jack sinks if you're piping to ardour or from hydrogen for instance)

Considering the vast majority of modern applications now use 3 tier client-server (minimum 2 tier) architecture on the local machine (communicating over sockets and protocols like http), linux has become incredibly well suited for hosting and especially developing modern desktop applications.
