Please help a fellow out. I'm doing a test that might land me a much needed job. (PHP)

I'm trying to figure out why my string length is 2 after doing a preg_replace on it.

I'm applying to Google. Anybody got any piece of advice?

It's a "Sales Engineer" position. I personally know the head of sales, I could secure an interview. Coding experience is required but not used on the job.

The only thing I'm flimsy on is Linux. How hard is it to learn Linux? I already know basic CLI commands for VPS management.

I'm trying to make a filter system for images, that uses tags.

Im doing this by adding and removing a class that can hide this images.

If a certain word is written in the input, then this class will be added and removed from certain images.

However, there is some fuckery with it.
When I write for example "robot" in the input. Im supposed to get the anime image in red. This can also be seen in that the "hide" class is removed from this image, and added to the others. But for some reason, it's the anime image of "Light" that appears.

Why is this happening?
Does it have something to do with the flow in which JS executes?
How do I fix it?

One of the harder aspects imo.
Not because it is difficult, but because there is so much different things you can do and should know. And getting this experience usually just takes a lot of time. You just have to encounter these things in the wild and learn it then.
But if you can setup Apache or Nginx with a web server running on docker, then you should be good enough I assume.

Just to be clear, you're talking about JavaScript (or TypeScript), right?

Anyway, in JS, let and const have the same scope so the memory would be freed at the same time: at the end of the block where they're declared.

Maybe you're thinking of var? Which is function scoped rather than block scoped so in some cases it might be freed from memory later than with let. But you don't really need to care about that; you should always be using let/const instead.

Anyway the difference is that you can't reassign to a variable declared as const. E.g.

let x = 5;

x = 10; // all good :)

const y = 5;
y = 10; // error :(

Not entirely related, but fyi I would recommend using a for-of loop for that, e.g.

const list = document.querySelectorAll(".stuff");
for (const item of list) {
 const child = item.querySelector(".test");
 doSomething(child);
}

(Note that it's valid to use "const item of list" because that basically just compiles to a "const item = list[i:lit]" statement at top of each iteration of the loop.)

Just a note: you can't pass in props that regular span/div elements use (e.g. style, onClick, className) to React Components and expect that it will do anything. If you're using react semantic UI, it has no "style" prop listed. It has "className" so try creating a class in your css code.

VS Code should also be providing autocomplete suggestions (ctrl+space or f12) on your react components if the library has typescript typings (which this one does). DOM (Document Object Model) is actually just the html node structure of parent/child elements in the literal "document" object, and "traversing" the DOM and the "DOM tree" and whatnot are just terms for navigating your html, especitally programmatically but maybe not necessarily. For example, if I make a new class div object and I punch a new <div> into the html, I'm technically inserting into the DOM tree. but I can have code that runs in advance and appends new code into the page before serving to the client

Im still not 100% sure whether the code is literally added and legible in the HTML when you add it to the DOM with something like document.createelement(), but i expect that it would be, so 4chan could do something like load into the received HTML of the page that the image in the OP has dimensions of 1625x1134

Am I on the right track?

Until the client parses the document (the raw text being sent from the server to the client) there is no dom representation. A server can only create a large piece of text that "looks" like a dom model, until it's parsed on the frontend the dom model / tree doesn't exist.

The "code" isn't added, an instruction is sent to the browser to insert a node into the dom with a given set of attributes, the dom then updates and your code has access to the new amended tree of nodes.

At my previous company we did it all the time. Removing duplicate data, optimizing the columns to use less data if possible, adding new columns and new tables when necessary to support new features...

You don’t have to remember every css property, even seniors look stuff up on mdn thatthey haven’t used in a while. And a solid understanding of javascript/typescript gives you a head start in understanding frameworks/libraries. And once you know one framework or library it’s easier to learn others. It’s not as if you have to start from square one for every new thing.

The problem I find with it is it does 2 things: It organises your code into an adhoc design system enforcing consistent style and secondly it changes the way you write styles by forcing you to use class names as proxies for (almost, but not all...) css properties. I welcome the former but have no time for the latter. I find it too opinionated for my tastes on HOW I should be writing my styles instead of just being a utility for organising and propagating style information/tokens throughout my code. i've done some personal stuff in Rust, but i think the fact that the language is always in flux and that there are so many "mandatory" libraries to know that aren't documented very well (looking at tokio) keeps Rust from becoming big.

FYI, JavaScript treats Strings differently than Arrays, and differently from how Java treats Strings. In JavaScript, Strings count as a "simple thing" (aka a "primitive"), whereas in Java they don't.

It's kind of hard to demonstrate an example of equality failing in Java because it will compile string literals to be the same memory address. But here's an example of the different behavior:

I agree.
But Golang seems great for Micro services architecture programs, and CLI programs. So I think it should do ok in the future.

But I am not too certain. From my limited experience, the main benefits are simple code and ease of deployment. And since it is a general programming language, it might lose out to other more popular general programming languages once they improve on ease of deployment.

I find that Golang is spectacularly shit at making APIs, coming from a Flask and FastAPI background.

The issue derives from having no one good way to handle routing (such that one blogger even enumerated 5 different ways that were all ugly)
The inherent disconnect between the route and it's implementation is pretty annoying.

Depends where you're coming from and what problems you're trying to solve.
I've seen dudes who are 20+ years into this field literally get demolished by React. I've seen beginners (who know JS) where React just clicks for them.
All depends on that mindset and where you're coming from, but I will say that React is enough of a shift that it's my default form of solving problems on the front end. Maybe that'll shift in the near future.

I don't feel as if that's a major problem on any project, the standards seem to be fairly obvious, styled components/emotion/or one of the newer zero runtime models and the rest is just project-based semantics decided upfront to keep it consistent.
A much bigger problem is the general state of... state... management with one of the largest answers to that problem being a related-but-unrelated external tool (redux), but they also have recoil for large but not large enough solutions. Then you have alternative perspectives which demand people reevaluate why they're even using these solutions for so much when react out of the box can and should be handling them if your app was structured properly. And these solutions aren't interchangeable for the most part unlike styling where you could legitimately swap them without much effort.

On the contrary, learning JavaScript by itself is fraught with misdirection.
Webshitters have no idea how to program, so over the course of JS's lifetime you have absolute disasters like defining libraries as (object()) and other assorted trash.

Ideally you'd learn how to program using real languages, but since you don't have the luxury, React is linear enough and has enough "rails" to keep you on track and prevent you from doing dumb shit.

It's not a react thing, it's a module bundler configuration thing. You can probably use require.context or install a glob loader plugin for your bundler.

There's also a few complexities when loading in non js files (do we convert the image to base64 to be part of the bundle at a certain file size, should it be put in a static folder when bundling?)

If you're looking to apply to jobs specifically with front-end in the title you can get away with not building the backend at all and still impress people if you want to minimise the time spent on it. You can make almost anything but what will impress people is a nicely designed layout with some interaction, scroll animations, etc. I've built hundreds of sites but my portfolio only has 4 things on it because those are the most impressive pieces. I would curate what you build around 2 or 3 key skills you want to demonstrate.

WSL is where you run Linux (usually or only?) Ubuntu inside windows. But not as a VM, Windows just does some magic to make it compatible with Linux.
As far as I understand it, it is similar to being the reverse of Wine.

if it's already on your pc just not enabled you can go to control panal > programs >programs and features and go into the 'turn windows features on or off' and select the windows subsystem for linux feature. should be there on reboot.
otherwise, just do a search on google and it'll probably be more thorough
