What do you use for GUIs?
Starting to think that using cairo, skia or nanovg to make a GUI library would be the way to go but I don't want to write GUI library.

SOME details of C were indeed influenced by the PDP, but the current popular narrative that C is a language specifically tailored to the PDP and that modern processors are built specifically to "emulate" it and accomodate C is absurd.

C was intended since the very beginning to be a platform-independent language and was ported to architectures vastly different from the PDP-11, such as the Motorola 68K. By placing relatively little demands on the target platform, C has become the most ported programming language of all time, and this is a fact.

In fact, C initially faced tons of screeching from the language design community (especially in academia) because it tried to be practical and direct at the expense of theoretical perfection. Many vendors also were initially skeptical of supporting it.

The truth is that C, while by no means a perfect language and by no means the right fit for every problem, got popular in no small part thanks to inherent technical merits and not because of some grand conspiracy to doom computing.

Got a question for you folks, i have a complex c program that desperately needs refactoring or rewriting. I’m not sure if I should attempt to refactor it or to rewrite it using another language like zig. I’m inclined towards refactoring, but I’m not sure how to tell what the right call is here. Any tips on how to determine what course of action to take to determine if I should rewrite or refactor? I’m a noob with c so both would be tough. A lot of the c code looks cancerous though, even to my eyes.

If you can make small, version-controlled, strides towards better code then do that, and refactor. Otherwise do a rewrite. Don't rewrite in zig though.

accessing a register is fast. of course its no guarantee that it will actually be stored in a register, but it would benefit speed if it were.

Making syscalls in inline asm, which is needed if you don't link against libc. iirc this is the only time gcc is guaranteed to obey the register keyword. https://wiki.osdev.org/System_V_ABI#Calling_Convention
