I'd like to know if a program like folding@home could be done for LLM's.
The idea being the model is chunked/segmented and each user that has a capable GPU (3090/4090) works on a chunk, then sends the completed work back.
A single PC will never have enough memory to work on say a 180B model alone. I'm not sure the idea is feasible, but maybe it's worth considering.

Do you want an OEM charger because you are reselling the laptop and want a better price?
Could get a universal charger and make the connector look less hacky to possibly fool whoever purchases the laptop into thinking the charger is original.

This is the back of a Blu-ray player I am interested in. My understanding is that if I wanted to listen with headphones, I would plug in my amp via RCA to the front L and R channels. However, there is also an optical audio output next to it. Could I also listen with headphones by connecting my DAC (that's connected to my amp via XLR) to the Blu-ray player with a Toslink cable? If that is possible, would there be any disadvantages?

So I had a conda environment unpacked in a directory, but I moved the files that the package worked on into another directory and it broke the package that I use, from a long time of reading the docs I have to create a new environment for the package to unpack in but why do all the other packages work but this single one? What are people's thoughts on the Apple HomePod? We're considering getting some home assistant shit for my grandmother, since she's fallen over a few times in her house and has, at times, been unable to reach her iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch. I have a little Minisforum computer lying around (x86), and was gifted a 14 inch mobile touch display. Since the display has a VESA mount, I've been thinking about turning this thing into a video station/web browsing computer for bed, because I'm such a lazy bum I sometimes can't be bothered to get out of bed and sit at my desk.
The tiny computer already has a very nice Linux Mint install on it that I'd actually like to keep. But the display is a touchscreen. Are there any semi well working desktops for Linux that are touch optimized, so I don't have to use a wireless keyboard and touchpad all the time?
Or would you recommend an alternative OS? It really just has to do YouTube, Netflix, local files like MKV, MP4, MP3 - the usual stuff.

This should protect me from the failure mode of host drive failure during the process of rewriting the backup drive. The only way this realistically backfires is if my shit burns down or i get robbed or for some reason i decide full backup time is a good time to go around deleting files locally, or if all 3 drives fail (or the 2 host drives fail during the backup-writing process).

This feels good enough. I just don't really want the hassle of keeping track of two external backups.

1. Don't mix multiple adblockers. They interfere with each other in ways that are difficult to predict and ublock origin by itself works just fine
2. Chrome is niggerlicious. You're using Google's product to access Google's website while attempting to block Google's primary business model and acting surprised when it doesn't work. Use literally any other browser
3. So far it mostly affects signed-in users. Log out and see what happens
4. Clear cache on ublock and refresh everything, it may have been fixed (for now)

How does google go about this? Will they ban you for having the file name or do they have to download the file and then ban you so they have proof? Because if its the former, i have to dump ~10tb worth of data into a .tar and i really dont want to do that, but if its the former, i can enable client side encryption on my sync and they wont be able to prove that it is a pirated movie despite having the name

DVD's are (up to) 720x576 for PAL and 720x480 for NTSC, it supports a fixed number of alternate lower resolutions, but nothing higher
some rippers will make 848x480 or 1024x576 encodes because the source was 16:9 (anamorphic), and they wanted to make square pixels, i don't think it's necessary, you should just leave the resolution as-is and set the aspect in the container, like it is on the DVD, let the player stretch the video
if you find DVD rips larger than 1024x576, then they have either been upscaled, or they aren't DVD rips (or in the rare case, they're actually HD-DVD rips rather than regular DVD rips)

as a side note, i would recommend making PAL DVD's even if you're in an NTSC region for making DVD's of 24fps content (movies, anime, most modern tv shows)
the reason i say that is because you can fit those on a DVD by simply speeding them up 4% from 24fps to 25fps (DVD does not support 24fps, sounds weird but TVs back then didn't either), and you get higher resolution than NTSC as well
24fps on an NTSC dvd require 3:2 pulldown, to turn it into 30fps (technically 30/1.001fps), this introduced judder artifacts, but does at least preserve the original speed
i may be biased, being from a PAL country, but i prefer a slight speed difference to constant judder, especially if you do it right and pitch-adjust the audio so it's not higher pitched (ffmpeg has a filter for it)

Guys my smoke alarm (9v battery) was beeping one short beep every minute or so, usually indicating battery is low and needs replacement

Within the very same 5 minute timeframe, my carbon alarm (3xAA batteries) in a different room near the heater started doing the same, one short beep every minute or so.

Both these devices use different batteries and were installed in a different year

What are the fucking odds that both batteries die at the same fucking time or do I need to evacuate or something?

You know why? Because my new gf slept over last night for the first time.

And the very same night, this new smoke detector new battery also just happened to be empty the next morning, at the same time the carbon monoxide alarm which uses different batteries and was installed at a different time just happened to be empty.

as for a hotkey, you could make a hotkey which sends a sigkill to the parent program of the foreground window, so it works like alt+f4
though in all seriousness i wouldn't suggest using this unless you need to, the point of sigterm is to let program exit gracefully, finish what they're doing, close file handles, etc, sigterm is closer to deliberately crashing the program, so to speak

I wouldn't be surprized if there are places in india that look like that, but you should take the Cisco cert you qualified for and then look for a job and another cert you can get while at that job that will make you more valuable. When they realize that they will either call you up to ask for you to come back, in which case you can bleed them through the nose, or you can tell them to fuck off and laugh at them flailing around.
Also, another good tip is don't be afraid to spend your own personal money to make your life safer/eaiser at work. It will make you happier and more productive, I knew a guy that use to do webdev demos for clients and he would save all the different webdevs he showed the clients to save time and effort. He even stored them on his own externals because they wouldn't shell the money out to store them.
When they found out he was storing them he was fired and forced to delete all the web mocks he stored for going against company policy and clients were fucking pissed, because they were use to having this dude get back to them with the update in a day or less and now they had to wait weeks to get a mock up again. Whats worse is that they called him and asked him to come back and if he had the files backed up at home. All he did was laugh and tell them "fuck you" and hung up. They legit offered him 15 to 20% raises to comeback multiple times and he said "no" every single time until one day he was called by the CEO and they set up a meeting at a cafe and the dude just stood him up and that is when they were told to stop trying to get him back. Fucked the company out of millions that fiscal quarter too.

The displays of the era didn't have a problem with input vs display pixels not aligning perfectly. It was a perfectly sensible optimization at the time.

the displays in that era only had a line count, which DVD uses the correct amount, there is no fixed horizontal pixel count, 720 was chosen as it was deemed enough to cover the useful practical resolution visible on most tvs
there's no advantage or reason for the pixels to be square, there's no artifacts from non-square pixels like you get on an LCD

How do you guys keep your keyboards de-greased? I have really greasy hands even after washing them and it gets annoying to type on after even a single day. A microfiber towel kinda helps but it definitely doesn't take the grease off, moreso spreads it around. I just tried 70% isopropyl but I think it's wearing away at the keys because it came out black. I don't think its built up grease because I replaced the keyboard on this thing not too long ago.

Alright my X570S, 5800X PC has been going strong for a year, I decide to change the CPU fan to a Silent Assassin 120 and now the PC won't boot, I've tried re-seating the RAM, taking the CPU out and putting the fan back on but I am at my wits end. The motherboard LED says it's DRAM but everything was working perfectly before I changed the fan. There's no video out and I tried a new GPU too.

So I took the bait and installed Linux (Ubuntu). Chose the light version in the installation process, without any software, because I've heard of its Amazon fiasco.
Going through settings took me ~2 mins.

Upgrading from 16GB to 64GB DDR5 ram on my laptop.
That's two 2x8GB to 2x32GB.
I intend to keep the old ram for a while in case I encounter any issues with the new sticks for troubleshooting, but I don't want to just let 16GB rot in a drawer forever if the new ones are fine.

As a suggestion for your other questions, look into Kodi and its custom addons. Kodi runs everywhere (Windows, Linux, Mobile, Android TV) and just provides an interface with a video player and a way to index local files (or local network files) into a library that you can then play.

Addons written for Kodi are just Python code that pull internet resources into Kodi for easy playing inside the interface. Addons exist for what you ask for.

Note that some of these addons require a universal hoster account that is not free (Real-Debrid, Premiumize, etc.) or a usenet account with binary newsgroups (and long retention, especially for older and obscurer shit).

A few anime addons are also available, search Yandex for Kodi and Anime addon. You'll find them.

There's also a JAV addon which you'll find via the same route.

The above are streaming addons, so nothing gets stored by default. But in the settings you will usually find an option to save the stream as a download in the location of your choice.

I came into some money, and for years of using handmedown 60hz 1080p cheap monitors I've decided I want a new monitor. I figured somwthing 1080p or 1440p would be a safe bet with higher refresh. I see a lot of ultrawide for 1440p.

How the fuck does gaming work on that? I know some will natively support, but say it doesn't, does it just only fill up the supported portion of the screen or does it try to stretch? I can see why it would be great for workstation stuff but gaming is my main concern. I also don't really understand freesync vs premium or gsync compatible versus just gsync or ultra or that shit, what the hell is hdr, is it just better color grading? Do I need oled?

Here's a strange one. At last got around to obtaining some external hard drives and setting them up for full back-up use. Thanks to anons from a month or so ago for the useful input on that.

Just started transferring a large folder to one of them, but every two seconds I'm stopped by a pop-up box saying

>"If you move this folder, it will no longer be shared."

I click "Continue" on this box and a few more files/folders transfer before it re-appears again. All progress halts until I click continue again, and then so on.

The folder I'm transferring is 286 GB total and composed of numerous sub-folders, so this is obviously unworkable. The estimated transfer time is already 1 whole day. I need to get rid of this sharing malarkey.

So I had a search around and google seemed to suggest it's to do with user permissions, access rights, parent folders and inheriting properties etc.. Let me know if this is right - regardless, I tried looking into it.

There's no other users on this machine besides myself. I checked in security and the folder in question is listed as accessed by

>Administrators

When I try to remove any of these, I'm stopped by another pop-up:

I'm running a Personal Hotspot off an iPhone 13 pro. My phone gets about 80mbps, and I have it connected to an older Thinkpad right now where it tested around 40mbps. My phone stays relatively cool even when I'm streaming video or whatnot. All of this is well and fine.
When I connect it to a much more modern "gaming" laptop, my speeds drop to about 5-10mbps and my phone starts massively overheating. What's likely causing this? More modern network protocols? I have an Android phone. I want to make a setup which would work like this:
- I make a screenshot on the phone
- Immediately upon that happening, the screenshot gets uploaded to cloud
I tried dropbox and onedrive, but their camera roll feature does not trigger immediately and only uploads my shit when I open the program.
I'm going to use this setup to collect screenshots of various games and edit them as they come along on my computer, which is why I did not look into transferring them directly onto my PC through USB, seeing as that would be technically gaming while charging and could lead to potential unwanted consequences.

In my experience, SSDs can become permanently silly for a single computer, but otherwise entirely useable. I'd try it on a couple of otherdevices and see if it works just fine on them.

Otherwise, testdisk is probably your friend. It won't retrieve the filenames or any other metadata which is a bitch but otherwise you can retrieve all of your non-corrupted data.

I doubt it will unfuck it however - in my case, I still have an SSD full of movies that I take around my family's houses for movie nights, but which will not work on my own laptop at all. The disjunct between the "an" and "hero" part is largely what makes the meme funny, but it's not mysterious really at all - native english speakers mess this up all of the time. I used to tutor English to a mix of ESOLs and native english kids, and a lot would write "an hero" because they actually drop the h and say "ero" instead of hero. You can't really blame the ignorant for that, since it is consistent as a rule. But what on earth put the "hero" in the phrase is a riddle within an enigma.

Motivation to others that feel stupid. I'm really stupid. But I finally fucking reverse engineered this shit even though I feel like I don't understand anything. Now it works. I used clean original dwm to test every conflicting patch and make it work. It actually blows my mind that this fucking stupid person like me actually did figure this out. Yes, it was only like four if else things to check fakefullscreen state but I have never done anything with C let alone to modified other person's code.

Also, never give up, never start over, make backups, never distrohop, never reinstall anything. Just fucking fix it. It hurts so bad but just do it and you feel powerful when you figure it out.

Just today, one of my three Chrome accounts decided it wants to close all tabs shortly after opening. It also closes all other Chrome tabs when this happens.

Data about which tabs were open etc. is saved just fine, so it's not really a crash or anything. The exact amount of time it takes for this to kick in varies quite widely - sometimes in happens in about 15 seconds, othertimes I can browse on the account for a few minutes, opening tabs and such before suddenly all Chrome browsers vanish.

What I've noticed: once that account's browser is up, my CPU spikes out of no-where. Clicking on pretty much any feature of a web-page, or even mousing over interactive elements, hastens both the CPU spike and the crash.

It's also independent of the logged-in Google account, as I've tried every configuration and other browser accounts can handle it just fine, while this one haunted account causes a mass-close no matter what is or isn't logged in.

I googled about for advice and saw some saying for me to cut and paste the accounts section of chrome into another folder, running it with new accounts, then pasting the old accounts folder back in. This had the effect of logging me out of everything and clearing cookies, and nothing else.

How has this one browser account become haunted? How can I ghost bust it? Or is there some way to migrate everything (including my lengthy browser history and restore-tabs from previous sesh) to another new account?

Again; I'm so happy to finally stop that "Arch breaks! Arch is shit!" while it is always ME that breaks stuff. I was also first timer. If you think you can't do something, just try it out. take a deep breath when you fuck everything up and are sitting front of black screen with errors. You can fix it. Don't ever reinstall. Never distrohop. Yes, you can learn this.

Any ideas bros? This is by far my shittiest and least important drive, but it worked until like two hours ago so I'm still kind of upset.

Status update: I've spotted another issue while attempting a workaround. I've created a new browser account, logged into the Chrome account associated with the crashing browser account, and hit sync. Nothing's being synced over - no browser extensions, no settings, no search history or opened tabs, nothing.

Tried this with a couple of others to partial success - at the very least extensions copy but nothing else copies over. Synch seems to be at least partially disrupted either way. Is it that my faulty browser account has a synching issue, and goes CPU-berzerk on start-up attempting to sync too much?

The answer will always be no as long as Redmond smells like curry. They're going to push EOL for 10 out a bunch anyways because of how reluctant enterprise users are to move off it so I'd just stay there unless there's a really good reason to leave

The new-ish (2022) laptops my parents have now are using DDR4 so I can't even give them to them and my friends mostly use desktops. By the time I buy new laptops for people they'll probably all be DDR6 on shelves or I won't be able to find laptops with less than 16GB standard.
Any tips on how to give these away to people who will actually use them? Wouldn't wanna list them on craigslist and have get them sniped by a reseller or something doing it for profit.

When SSDs "die" they do one of two things.
Start corrupting data and shitting on everything in a total failure mode or returning unusable data or bricking instantly without signs beforehand
OR
Become read-only and reliably read data back, but refuse to write new data.

CDI says you have 7% health left. This leads more to the second scenario, potential write locking ahead.
Your SSD may become write locked once you hit 0%.
Definitely look into replacing it, an equivalent to a cheapo 240GB Kingston SATA SSD is worthless and can be had for like $20 or less easily. If you're happy with Chinkshit (no-name brands) then considerably less.

If you are happy loading WORM (Write once, read many) data or maybe more commonly referred to as "Archive" data on the drive it can potentially live for 100years with no degradation so it's not garbage or anything but you basically don't want to be storing games/operating systems on it for much longer.

According to the math you've used ~93% of the writes with 7% health remaining. At 88TB, that means you'll hit 100% at ~94TB. You've got like 6TB left, which means you can delete everything on it and re-fill it another 24 times (writing 6TB total) before having to worry about it.

It's not defective yet. You are just wearing it out.

Got a service which needs to be forked, using screen to start up a console for a server. Using screen -X I can do a clean shutdown (tested so I know it works) with ExecStop, but for whatever reason -- even with TimeoutStopSec set -- systemd immediately murders the process without mercy when trying to stop the service.

Using KillMode=none, I actually get the clean shutdown I need, but looking at the logs, systemd complains about PIDs still running even though they aren't anymore.

What is this weird behavior and how can I avoid hacking around it with KillMode?

Nvm, the answer was not to use screen and instead start the server console directly with systemd and have access to it through journalctl. Writing to the console can then be done by making a socket file and using stdin, using echo on that running socket to send commands to the console.

Now to deal with a warning about that socket after stopping the service...
