Look at the map.
The Chobanid was of Mongol origin as well. Togha Temur, a claimant to the Ilkhanate, was positioned near the Sardabars until 1353.

Mongols ruled Iraq since 1258 sacking of Baghdad (Guo Baoyu's grandson Guo Kan particpated in that and the siege of the Nizari castles in Iran)

Mongol ilkhanate rule in Iraq, Turkey and Iran lasted until 1335.

Mongol Jalayirids in Iraq and Iran lasted until 1432 when the Turks Qara Qoyunlu and Aq Qoyunlu replaced them in Iran

Timur came and also sacked cities like Isfahan and Baghdad and Damascus and Aleppo after the Mongols came.

How did the shia sunni divide contribute to the rapid decline of the ilkhanate? half of the dynasties after the fall of the ilkhanate were shia like the jalayrids, chobanids (odd because Choban the dynastic ancestor was a staunch sunni) and the sarbadars. I imagine there must have been a lot of tension as Oljeitu's son Abu Said and many of the mongol amirs protested against the former's conversion to Shi'ism and the alliance between Abu Said and Choban partly had to do with their stance against the shia

The destruction of Baghdad is dubbed as the most mournful event in the history of Islam. When the Mongol army of Hulagu Khan took Baghdad in February 1258, they killed 200,000 to a million people. The estimates vary. Severed heads in hundreds were made into minarets all across the city. So strong was the stench of decay from the ruins that Hulagu had to move his camp upwind.

Hulagu’s men raped women in scores, tossing them from one to another as trophies. Those whose lives were spared were made into sex slaves as souvenirs. The victors made rape a weapon of war to intimidate the people of the conquered city.
