Think about this. It had the highest standard of living of all communist countries, but was seen as a backwards, oppressive, poor shithole by their ethnic brethren from across the border and as soon as they had freedom, they immediately petitioned for annexation to the FGR (BRD).

The impact it had on generational wealth, the consciousness of the Eastern Germans and its genetic impact was worse than anything the West did to Germans. Communism really destroys excellence in a population. The Russians will never recover it. The Eastern Germans only because they have their Western Brothers to intermix with and because a lot of Western Leadership travelled and settled down in the East. Communism damaged the population so much that all important people in the East actually moved there from the West. All corporations are from the West. Höcke and other famous politicans are Western Germans. This is the damage communism does to a population. It makes people mediocre. No one can or wants to strive for something greater, because that literally was illegal for half a century.
That is why I hate low-brow right-wingers, who think the East was better for Germans than the degenerate West. That’s completely wrong. The West can return to greatness instantly with another moral revolution. The East will have to slowly and meticulously built up for many Generations and it will still lag behind for a long time.

It was the same as all other countries in the USSR. It all changed during the time on oil prices on whoever was in charge.

Most of the population was definitely poorer than the Western Europe. They worked in factories and were paid in East German marks. The money could be used to buy goods of dubious quality. Apartments and basic groceries were cheap but large purchases such as cars had a waiting list which often took several years. People could not leave the country except to other Communist states and needed a reason to move from one town to another (such as a job change requested from their place of work).

The Stasi was actually very feared right until the very end so people did not discuss much in public except with trusted confidants.

I went to the east germany museum in Berlin. Pretty shitty establishment. They sell bits of the Berlin wall, they are real chunks of the wall but they are painted with graffiti to make them more appealing. Some dood bought a few trucks of wall rubble and makes a living by painting small bits and selling them off to the museum
The museum talks about some facets of normal life. For instance people who refused army service were barred from university except for theology. I dont remember anything else, they had a trabant rigged like an arcade game but i couldn't make it work

Bavaria was a largely agrarian state outside of Munich and Franconia. Bavaria's big GDP boost came explicitly because of all the eastern companies moving to the American occupation sector when they were running away from the Soviet occupation zone. The industrial heartlands of pre-war Germany was in Saxony, the Ruhr, Berlin itself, and of course the Rhineland. In that sense, East Germany had plenty of advanced industry from Sachsen and Berlin, but they had to literally ship much of it to the Soviet Union as reparations.
Nowadays Sachsen is once again an industrial powerhouse, with lots of computer chip manufacturing and automobiles based out of there.

The problem with soviet communism wasn't communism but the fact it was a vanguard of incompetent slavs and other russian nationalities (jews, georgians, ukranians, etc) which bailed out on the project by the 60s. Communism when done by a competent group of people is an ideology of transcendence. It was during the era of Stalin that Russia went from a backwater into an industrial nucelar capable, space faring superpower spreading its ideology across the planet rapidly. It was only when Russia embraces revisionism and slavic people like Khruschev took power it embraced mediocre existence
